About the MDHS
Preserving the Past, Informing the Future
Founded in 1966, the Merrickville & District Historical Society (MDHS) is a volunteer-driven, non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of our region’s rich heritage.
While the Village of Merrickville-Wolford maintains the historic Blockhouse building, the MDHS is the custodian of the collection inside. Our members and volunteers work tirelessly to research, preserve, and display the artifacts that tell the story of "The Jewel of the Rideau."
Our Mission
Our goal is to bring history to life for residents and visitors alike. We achieve this through:
-
Stewardship: Managing a vast collection of local artifacts, photographs, and archival documents.
-
Education: Hosting an annual Speakers’ Series featuring historians, authors, and experts.
-
Advocacy: Protecting the architectural and cultural integrity of Merrickville and the surrounding district.
-
Research: Assisting individuals in uncovering their family roots or the history of their historic homes.
The Collection
The MDHS Collection is a window into the 19th and 20th centuries. From the industrial machinery of the Rideau Canal to the delicate lace and textiles of pioneer households, our archives provide a comprehensive look at the social and economic evolution of our district.
Key collection areas include:
-
The Industrial Era: Artifacts from the local mills and foundries.
-
Military History: Records and equipment from the 1812 era through the World Wars.
-
Agricultural Life: Tools and stories from the farming families of Wolford and the surrounding townships.
-
Village Life: Personal letters, textiles, and domestic items that reveal the social fabric and everyday experiences of the "professional women," shopkeepers, and families who built our community.
Our Community Partners
History is a team effort. The MDHS works closely with:
-
The Village of Merrickville-Wolford: To ensure the Blockhouse remains a premier heritage destination.
-
Friends of the Rideau: To preserve the cultural heritage of the Rideau Canal.
-
Parks Canada: Maintaining the historical significance of the Rideau Canal UNESCO World Heritage Site.
-
Local Educators: Providing resources for students to learn about their backyard history.
How You Can Help
We are an organization powered by passion, not profit. You can support our mission by becoming a member, donating artifacts, or volunteering your time as an archivist or event coordinator.
